Growing up in rural Cape Breton Island, I always had an interest in cooking, and especially baking. It was not uncommon for my parents to come home from running errands and find some sort of dessert or snack that I had made. Growing up my entrepreneurial instincts took over and I would trade my baked goods with schoolmates. Soon, I was selling cookies to my friends and classmates.
Fast forward to adulthood, and I was working as a civil technician for various engineering firms over the course of two decades. But then, as luck would have it, around Christmas time in 2011 I found myself laid off. While weighing my options, a few friends who had tried my Oatcakes from an old family recipe suggested I should make some and try selling them for the holidays.
And that is how the Cape Breton Oatcake Society was born!
The rest, as they say, is history. Today we make thirty different flavors across three product lines
